Human beings have evolved to be social creatures. There is an innate tendency in us to connect with other humans. I am sure there is an evolutionary advantage to this, more connections implies more people to help in the time of need. But that to me personally, is one of the by-products and possibly an indicator that you truly are making friends and not acquaintances. Following are the reasons I tend to wander over to the Internet:
To begin with, Internet has been the place where I always found answers to. Ever since my childhood, I’ve been inquisitive about the world around me. Satisfying my curiosity is one of the greatest pleasures for me. Internet has given me quick access to the knowledge I sought dearly. This reason enough has propelled me to be on the net for majority of me life.
Furthermore, being on the Internet often reminds that there are other people like me. On an average day, a person seems to interact with, say 15-20 people, physically. But over on the Internet, this number can very easily be in 100s or even 1000s. More people implies higher the chances of meeting the person with whom your interests overlap the most with. This inadvertently makes me feel homely and that there are other people facing same issues as me. This gives me the fuel to solve my problems. So are these other people after all!
Such are the reasons, I seem to find myself over on the Internet. It is unimaginable for me to live in a world without Internet. Sure there are downsides to have access to all the information available to you all the time, but I take this over the other any and every day.
I am sure if I put my head to it, I’ll find at least a couple more. But by and large, as an introvert and an intensely curious person, it hardly is the question about “Why I am on the Internet?”, it instead would have been, “Why I am not on the Internet?”
